Now on NYTE Small Press website

February 24, 2010

Our new venture into e-book publishing is now part of the NYTE Small Press website

Plays and Playwrights for the New Millennium – the e-book has its own page.  Read the short blurbs about all the plays and a bit about the playwrights.  As Bonus Material you will find included four short plays never before published and two short excerpts from longer works.

There’s a second page that we’ve called the Plays and Playwrights album.  Quotes from each of the playwrights and some really interesting photos.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

Welcome to the new Plays and Playwrights Blog

February 21, 2010

I have been blogging for better than a year.  It’s been lots of fun.  Now it’s time for a slight upgrade and a few changes.

The first change you can easily see — the blog looks different and has a nice neat feel to it.  Hope you like it.

Next change is I have added some permanent pages to the blog.  The first one tells you about NYTE Small Press and the other page is an overview on how you can buy our books.

Going forward I will continue to keep you updated on our books and any new projects NYTE Small Press may undertake.  I will also use the blog to continue keeping you updated on the doings of the playwrights we have published.

In addition I am adding to the blog calls for play submissions and like information from around the country and the world.  Formerly these were listed on nytheatre.com’s buzz page but we feel they will reach interested people quicker here on the blog.

Comments are always welcome. Thanks for reading.

February 20, 2010

Red Fern Theatre Company will be presenting +30NYC at Center Stage beginning March 4. It’s an evening of short plays around a common theme. Three of our playwrights will be part of the evening.

Ashlin Halfnight (“07) will present Remembrancer Vessel described as ‘One family’s cryogenic hopes and worst nightmares.’

Mac Rogers (’08) gives us Footprint whose blurb reads “Even green living takes its toll on the environment and relationships.” And it is directed by Daniel Talbott (’08).

Certainly worth checking out.

Congratulations Dr. Julia Lee Barclay

February 17, 2010
Julia Lee Barclay published in Plays and Playwrights 2001 received her Ph.D. in Northampton, UK (on Valentine’s Day) where she has lived and studied for several years. Her thesis is entitled Apocryphal Theatre: practicing philosophies… And, having read it, I can tell you she certainly deserves credit for a well researched paper that proves the philosophical basis for the theatre lab she has created. Congrats Dr. Julia.
Popping up his head behind Julia is her husband, Dr. Bill Aitchison, a well known theatre artist in his own right.

A New Feature on the Plays and Playwrights Blog

February 13, 2010

In an effort to always make this blog ever more useful NYTE Small Press is adding a new feature. nytheatre.com often receives notices of requests for submissions for play readings, contests, productions, etc. In the past we would post these on the nytheatre.com Buzz page. To give these postings greater visibility, these listings will now appear here on the PLAYS AND PLAYWRIGHTS blog. I am adding a category called Submissions where all these posts will be stored.

Let me know if you think this is helpful. We keep trying. The next several posts will be the current submission requests that til now were on our Buzz page.

NYMF announces Guidelines for 7th Annual festival

February 13, 2010

This item submitted by David Gersten, publicist

The New York Musical Theater Festival will begin accepting open submissions for its Next Link Project January 11th for the seventh annual festival taking place September 27 October 17, 2010.

Twelve of the Festivals full production slots are reserved for participants in The Next Link Project, NYMFs primary writer service program. The Next Link Project empowers emerging musical theatre writing teams as both artists and entrepreneurs by providing the training and relationships needed to help them move their musicals from mere readings to fully-realized productions and to advance their careers by maximizing the exposure they receive in the Festival.

Any work that has not been produced professionally in New York City may be submitted by authors with or without industry representation, but scripts should be ready for developmental production and the widespread exposure NYMF provides. All entries undergo double-blind evaluations by several members of NYMFs reading team, with finalists referred to our grand jury.

Authors submitting to The Next Link Project will need to provide a demo recording of their songs, a detailed synopsis of their show, a 15-page script sample (15 consecutive pages representing the heart of the show and including lyrics for at least one of the songs), a complete script, and, if applicable, proof of rights to adapt underlying material.

The Next Link Project will accept submissions from January 11th through March 1st, 2010 with an early bird deadline on February 1st. For important additional information, including details about what it takes to produce your show in NYMF (and what you get in return), please visit nymf.org.
