This item from Lanie Zipoy

AMZ Creative, LLC announced it is accepting submissions for the 2012 Voices Inside Playwriting Residency at Northpoint Training Center, a male population medium security prison in Burgin, Kentucky.

Voices Inside is an inspirational inmate writing and theater program at Northpoint Training Center. The program uses theater arts and creative thinking to increase communication skills, build self-esteem, humanize and enrich the lives of those closed off behind bars. It has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nathan Cummings Foundation.

The 2012 Voices Inside Playwriting Residency offers a unique eight-day exchange. Under the guidance of Voices Insides Artistic Director Robby Henson and playwriting instructor Liz Orndorff, the resident playwright will lead writing workshops and critique the inmates’ work. The prisoner-playwrights will also read the visiting playwright’s work and discuss the playwright’s process and style. The residency will take place in July 2012.

Mac Rogers was the first recipient of the residency, and he spent two weeks in Kentucky in July and August 2011. He taught the prisoner-playwrights how to set up a suspenseful play and to utilize silence in their work. He said of the experience, “Working with the playwrights of Voices Inside was a profoundly rewarding experience. Seeing how much the act of playwriting means to these men was a powerful reminder for me of how much solace and enrichment there is in artistic expression. I was proud of what little I could teach them, and grateful for all they taught me.”

More information about the residency and the application may be found at www.northpointplays.com.

This item from Barb Kielhofer, Producing Director

The T. Schreiber Studio New Works Project is committed to supporting the development of new plays in a safe and nurturing environment-one that serves the playwright and enriches the T. Schreiber Studio community as a whole. The studio provides the playwright access to the expertise of experienced theatre professionals, sophisticated and well trained actors, and a supportive, interactive, audience. In, the New Works Project, T. Schreiber will develop new theatrical productions through a series of staged readings and collaborative refinement, culminating in a professional workshop production. The goal is to foster and elevate writers’ work to its fullest potential.

The winning play will receive two staged readings, in Winter and Spring, 2012, performed by T. Schreiber Studio actors. To further develop the play, audience feedback is solicited and the production staff of T. Schreiber will work directly with the playwright to refine the production. The New Works project culminates in a workshop production of the winning play for a short run in July 2012. There will be no cash prize provided for the selected play. However, the developmental assistance provided for the selected playwright is invaluable.

Guidelines:

Submission deadline: October 1st, 2011.

Submission must be full-length in any genre.

Plays may not have received a full-scale, professional production prior to submission.

Playwrights with past production experience are especially encouraged to submit new work.

Productions should be developed for the stage, not other media: e.g. screenplays or teleplays submitted as theatrical plays.

One script per author.

Due to the expected high volume of submissions, no materials will be returned to playwrights. Do not send a manuscript with or instead of the abstract. Unsolicited manuscripts will not be read. Paper copies must be mailed to T. Schreiber studio at the address listed below.

Phase II: All manuscripts that have been solicited for Phase II will be read and reviewed by the selection committee.

This item from Adam Samtur, on behalf of Just ASK

Just ASK is returning with style and flair to host its EIGHTH – count it, EIGHTH – One Night Stand night of staged readings!

And we’re looking your way!
That’s right! We need talented writer/directors and actors such as yourselves to help us make our most popular and long-lasting event a rousing success. Our next One Night Stand, A Night of Staged Readings will be held on Thursday, July 7th from 7-9pm at the Irish Rogue Bar at 356 W. 44th St. b/w 8th & 9th Aves. To those of you who have participated before, you know what a blast this event always is. We are looking for writers and actors to submit themselves (or their works) for the event!! No auditions necessary!

Our new CONTEST FORMAT which we rolled out in early 2010 will continue with this event. Audience members will vote on their favorite pieces and the playwright whose piece receives the most votes will receive a CASH PRIZE!!!!

What We’re Looking For:
– 8-10 short, preferably humorous/upbeat scripts. We find short sketch-like pieces work best, as opposed to dramas or monologues.
– Actors to perform in said pieces.
– Musicians or variety acts (stand-up, poetry, flamethrower-juggling, etc.) – keep set-up simple! You will only have about 1 minute to set up / take down.

Here’s how it works:

Playwrights:
1) Please submit your piece digitally to justaskproductions@gmail.com (Microsoft Word .doc or Adobe .pdf formats preferable) with a run-time of 8 minutes or shorter (no piece above 8 minutes will be considered).
2) In your email, please let us know if you have a cast for your piece. This is the preferred option as you will have worked with your actors before, but fear not: if you need actors, just tell us in your submission email and we will cast your piece for you from the pool of actors who submit. It is crucial that you let us know if you need actors or not.
3) You must be able to both attend the event and direct your own piece (call time is 6pm and we should be done around 9 or 9:30). If you REALLY want to be involved and it is impossible for you to direct/attend, let us know, and we will do our very best to accommodate.
4) A small $10 acceptance fee is asked of the writer(s) upon selection of their piece – ie, you need not pay us anything until we let you know that your piece was accepted. This helps subsidize the cost of the evening and acts as both our insurance policy and as your contribution to the “pool” – if your piece wins, you’ll make your money back AND THEN SOME! The fee must be brought to the venue the night of in cash or check (no cards, please)
**Your piece will not be considered if you do not provide us with the information listed above**

Actors:
1) Please submit a headshot and resume if you’d like to be considered for a part (you MUST be available from 6-10pm on Sunday the 18th!!)
2) Not all actors will be used; it will be based on the number and types of roles that are present in the selected scripts.

Musicians/Variety Acts:
Simply email us with some information about yourself, what kind of act (or music) you plan on playing, and links to any demo tracks, clips, or website info you deem appropriate.

Submissions for writers, actors, and musicians are due by Midnight on Wednesday, June 15th. If you submit earlier, you have a better chance of getting in. We will notify participants on a rolling basis; that is, as we cast the shows we will let you know. Do not book anything for July 7th until you hear from us! Once we email you, you will have 48 hours to confirm your participation. If you accept a role, you are expected to perform!
