id Theater announces they are now accepting submissions for 2011 Seven Devils Playwrights Conference which will take place in McCall, Idaho in June of 2011. The new deadline will be November 15, 2010.

We experienced a significant increase in submissions for the 2010 Conference and while we were thrilled with the level of interest in the Conference, it caused us to re-examine our entire submission process. In order to keep our commitment to read every script from cover-to-cover and hold on to the quality of readers that we have come to expect, while retaining our low five dollar submission fee we have determined that we must give our readers and ourselves the time necessary to do the job well. Please visit the submission page on our website: http://idtheater.org/7devils/submit.php for specific information about the submission process.

Daniel Talbott (PP ’08) is a playwright and a director and an actor and a producer. Here is an email he sent out the other day about the mine disaster in Chile. If it sounds of interest, please contact Daniel at: risingphoenixrep@yahoo.com

I don’t know how closely you all have been following what’s been going on with the miners down in Chile but I’ve been completely blown away by them and what’s going on down there and by their extraordinary spirit and heart. Last night Addie showed me this quote from a newspaper about the rescue team trying to create an entertainment program to help get them through this without losing their fucking minds, “Establishing a daily and nightly routine is important, the minister said, adding that having fun also will be critical. The rescue team is creating an entertainment program “that includes singing, games of movement, playing cards. We want them to record songs, to make videos, to create works of theater for the family” and it got me thinking that I want to send them a bunch of plays from all of us. You are some of my favorite people and artists out there and I know you’re all insanely busy but I think this could be a way of helping out and sending our love, thoughts and support to them. So if you have the time and are interested my thought was to try to have everybody write a ten minutetish short play in Spanish and try to collect them all by next Friday and I will print them and with some help get them down there. I know some of us unfortunately don’t speak or write fluently in Spanish so I was also wondering for us non Spanish speakers if any of you fluent rockstars would be willing to help out in translating some of the plays as well? When you get a sec let me know and I know this isn’t a lot but I thought it was something and in the end I think this what theatre’s all about, sitting in the dark and listening to stories – especially when you need them most. Again I’d love to get this off by next Friday cause obviously time’s a huge issue for them and I know that’s not long but again I’d so love it if you guys would help me do this. Please let me know if you have any questions.

In accepting the position, Mr. Guare remarked:

“In a few short years, the Yale Drama Series has asserted itself as the preeminent playwriting contest in the English speaking world. This annual event has become a playwright’s dream…

Are there guidelines? What are we looking for? Diaghilev said it best. When Jean Cocteau asked the great impresario what he wanted, Diaghilev simply replied ‘Astonish me’. Don’t worry. Sometimes the simplest truths can be the most astonishing. And then again – not. The Foundation and Yale’s goal is to uncover and give new voices to the theater. We welcome all entries to this celebration of the playwright.”

The winner of the Yale Drama Series – given annually to an emerging playwright — is awarded a prize of $10,000, publication of the play by the Yale University Press, and a reading at the Yale Repertory Theatre. The David C. Horn Foundation funds the annual international playwriting competition.

Submissions for the 2011 Yale Drama Series competition must be postmarked no earlier than June 1, 2010 and no later than August 15, 2010. The competition is open to any original, unpublished, and unproduced full-length play in English. For complete contest rules, please visit www.dchornfoundation.org/.

BMI has announced that the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Librettists Workshop is now accepting applications for membership. This unique writing program is dedicated to the development and discovery of bookwriters for the musical theatre. The deadline for applicants is May 15. The application can be downloaded at http://bit.ly/dwmeZd .

The Workshop’s goal is to clarify the special techniques of writing for the musical stage. BMI fully sponsors the Workshop; there is no cost to participating writers. Most members of the Librettists Workshop are accomplished playwrights, but some join the Workshop after experience in screenwriting, journalism, or other literary disciplines. The Workshop has become a springboard for new works, a resource for new collaborations, and a talent pool known throughout the theatrical industry.

Broadway Literary Manager and scriptwriter Nancy Golladay serves as Librettist Workshop Moderator. Members meet weekly to present work in progress and to participate in peer discussion. Golladay has also created a number of innovative programs where Librettist members work on short-term projects with members of BMI’s songwriting workshops to promote collaboration and networking among the groups. Occasional guest lecturers visit the Workshop to discuss other aspects of the theatre business. Participants learn musical theatre skills both through moderated critiques and from the examples shown by the group’s senior members.

To apply to the Librettists Workshop, writers must submit samples of their work with a résumé and completed application form by May 15. In addition to bmi.com, application forms and information may be obtained by contacting:
