Pace University Announces Open Submissions for "Pace New Musicals"

September 21, 2011

This item from Samuella Becker, media relations

The Musical Theater Program at Pace University, which embraces the development of new musicals as part of its mission, is currently accepting submissions of new musical theater works for a series of performances at Pace University in January 2012.

The chosen piece will be given a full reading in the Schaeberle Theater at Pace University in lower Manhattan, with actors chosen from the musical theater student body. There will be a two-week rehearsal period starting Tuesday, January 3, 2012 with seven performances starting January 18 and ending January 22, 2012.

Because of the short rehearsal time, completed scores and scripts are requested. Pace New Musicals will provide the space, the performers, a stage manager, a light board and light operator, and a director and music director.  If there is already a director and/or music director attached to the project and wants to continue that association, then it is up to the creators whether or not to use them for this reading.

PLEASE SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING (If you would like your submissions returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your application):

  • CD or mp3 files of three songs with sheet music (lead sheets are acceptable)
  • A brief description of each song as to its plot placement
  • A brief synopsis of the musical including time period and number of scene locations
  • A character breakdown including age, sex, approximate vocal part and a short description of each character.
  • Biographical information for each composer, lyricist & book writer. (Please include address/phone number/email)

SEND YOUR PACKAGE TO:
Robert Meffe
Pace New Musicals

or if submitting electronically: pacenewmusicals@gmail.com

If submitting electronically, please send files in Adobe pdf format, Microsoft Word format or Finale files up to Finale 2011.

Deadline: October 7, 2011

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Please submit 3 songs only. If you send us a full recording, we will only listen to the first 3 songs.
  • Submissions do not need to be produced in a studio. We are looking for talent and potential, not how well something is produced.
  • You will be notified by October 15, 2011 if you have been selected to present your musical.
  • Please include copyright clearances if they are necessary. Works cannot be considered without these.
  • If the piece is currently under option, please submit a letter from the option holder giving permission for entry.

T. Schreiber Studio Presents the 2012 New Works Project

August 24, 2011

This item from Barb Kielhofer, Producing Director

The T. Schreiber Studio New Works Project is committed to supporting the development of new plays in a safe and nurturing environment-one that serves the playwright and enriches the T. Schreiber Studio community as a whole. The studio provides the playwright access to the expertise of experienced theatre professionals, sophisticated and well trained actors, and a supportive, interactive, audience. In, the New Works Project, T. Schreiber will develop new theatrical productions through a series of staged readings and collaborative refinement, culminating in a professional workshop production. The goal is to foster and elevate writers’ work to its fullest potential.

The winning play will receive two staged readings, in Winter and Spring, 2012, performed by T. Schreiber Studio actors. To further develop the play, audience feedback is solicited and the production staff of T. Schreiber will work directly with the playwright to refine the production.  The New Works project culminates in a workshop production of the winning play for a short run in  July 2012.  There will be no cash prize provided for the selected play.  However, the developmental assistance provided for the selected playwright is invaluable.

Guidelines:

  • Submission deadline: October 1st, 2011.
  • Submission must be full-length in any genre.
  • Plays may not have received a full-scale, professional production prior to submission.
  • Playwrights with past production experience are especially encouraged to submit new work.

  • One script per author.
  • There is NO submission fee for the New Works Project.
  • Plays should be between 90 minutes and 2 hours in length.
  • Do not send more than the materials requested below. No incomplete submissions will be accepted. We do NOT return script or treatment submissions.
  • Phase I: Submit a two page maximum treatment of the play including title, character breakdown (please include age range and gender), and brief story synopsis. From these, selected manuscripts will be solicited for Phase II by November 1st, 2011.

Phase II: All manuscripts that have been solicited for Phase II will be read and reviewed by the selection committee. Tony Asaro & David Johnston & American Lyric Theatre

August 24, 2011

I must confess I knew little about American Lyric Theatre until a few days ago when I learned that two of our playwrights were reporting in about that development program.  Here first from Tony Asaro co-author of Our Country:

I couldn’t be happier about my most recent writing news:  I HAVE A COMMISSION!

A commission is an original piece of artwork completed by an artist at the request of and paid for by a client.

As you know, last year, I participated as a librettist in American Lyric Theatre‘s Composer/Librettist Development Program.  The program trains people to write contemporary opera.  I spent the year learning how to write opera.  Only 8 writers were accepted to the program.  This was a big departure for me–opera is very different from musical theatre.  But with the patience of the faculty and of my composer collaborators, it eventually started to click!

Both of my collaborations went well, but one in particular stood out: All Wounds Bleed written with composer Christopher Cerrone, a wunderkind who in his mid-20s has already had major commissions and works performed at Carnegie Hall.

Because of our success with All Wounds Bleed, Chris and I have been asked back to the CLDP as return resident artists.  ALT wants us to write a full-length opera!  Once the story we choose is approved, ALT will finance the development of the piece which includes further advising with the ALT faculty, underlying rights optioning, developmental readings, and even money for the writers!!!

And from David Johnston who penned The Eumenides – a retelling of the Oresteia:

I’ve been chosen as one of the eight new resident artists for the American Lyric Theater’s Composer Librettist Development Program. This will start in September and go until next June, with presentations at some cool places (like Symphony Space) and workshops with some amazing opera and theater people.

Congrats to both and I know we’ll be hearing more as the year progresses.

Perfect gift for the grad

June 22, 2011

I have always felt that our anthologies are the perfect gift for the graduate.  If they have just finished high school and are entering college with an interest in theatre, our books give a sampling of so many of the kinds of theatre being made and offer a glimpse into the work of so many playwrights.  We’ve published 174 to date.

If they are done with college and possibly pursuing a theatrical career in any manner, our books offer hundreds of monologues for auditions or scene work – tailored to the individual taste of the reader.

And now that we have branched out into ebooks, there is even more choice.  Check out our books and those available on kindle and nook and give a thoughtful gift to your favorite graduate.

Plays and Playwrights 2011 Now a Nook

June 13, 2011

Our latest book is now available your favorite way.  Buy the print version and curl up on the sofa for a hilarious read of Jason S. Grossman’s Love Me.  Or download to your kindle or your pc or mobile phone and read a bit, work a bit all the way through til the surprise twist at the end of Amy E. Witting’s G.I. Joe Jared, Based on One Really Bad Date.  And now you can get your copy from Barnes and Noble’s Nook store to read on your nook, or via any of the apps for other devices and you’ll just adore Tim Errickson’s Endless Summer Nights.

That’s only three of the eight plays. The other five are well worth your checking out – Fault Lines by Rebecca Louise Miller and Post Modern Living by Richard Sheinmel and Clay Zambo PLUS Manuel Igrejas’ Hassan and Sylvia and West Lethargy by Stephen Kaliski  — and don’t forget Floradita, My Love by Javierantionio Gonzalez.

Each and everyone is a great read – and an ever greater production. And so many ways to buy the book.
